In John 5, we see Jesus heal a man who had been an invalid for 38 years, simply by telling the man to get up and walk. The man’s first step of faith was literally his first step in nearly four decades. The command of Jesus carried the power of Jesus! But this healing got Jesus in trouble with the Jews. Why? Because Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath. The Jews thought this was work and work on the Sabbath was a big No-No!
Jesus’ explanation for doing what He did when He did it is that His Father was always at work and He was simply joining His Father in His work. This got Jesus in even more trouble and the Jews began to plot how they might kill Jesus, since He made Himself equal to God.
So Jesus explained His equality with the Father. Jesus is one with the Father in honor, life and judgment. To honor the Son is to honor the Father. All judgment has been given to Jesus by the Father. Hearing the words of Jesus brings life from the grave and life from condemnation.
