Is COVID-19 God’s Judgment? (Zechariah, part 2)

Over the last couple of months, we have been looking to the Minor Prophets and asking the question, “Is COVID-19 God’s judgment?”

The answer is twofold:

1. We’re not positive.

2. It’s complicated.

One thing we know for sure, the Minor Prophets have shown us how we should be responding IF this virus is God’s judgment. More importantly, these prophets have shown us the heart of God, so that we know not only how to respond, but to whom we are responding.

This morning we will travel forward in time as we begin a look at the last three of the Minor Prophets, all of whom have something in common: they prophesied after the exile. So there is no more message of impending judgment and exile for their sin. That’s already happened. They have experienced destruction and a generation of exile. Now they are back in the land of Judah, trying to rebuild what was lost. And the Minor Prophets were there to proclaim the word of the Lord to a discouraged, distracted people.

This morning we see in Zechariah’s visions and messages a reminder of God’s faithfulness in the past, the sin that got them to where they were, God’s presence with them as they rebuild from the rubble and a promise of a future King and Kingdom.
