We are in the midst of a sermon series titled “Those Who Know Your Name”, which is taken from Psalm 9:10, “Those who know your name will put their trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.” When we know who God is, we trust him and desire to seek him more. For the rest of December and through the month of January we will be looking together at the names and titles of God, so that our faith in him might grow.
This morning we will dip our toe back in Matthew chapter one and the story of the angel’s appearance to Joseph. The angel told Joseph to name their baby boy “Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Jesus’ name means Yahweh saves, or the Lord saves. Yahweh is the name God gives to himself. He is the “I Am” of the burning bush encounter with Moses. He is eternal, self-sufficient and self-determining. And when Jesus made the claim that “before your father Abraham was, I am”, he sealed his fate with his enemies who accused him of blasphemy worthy of death. When we see Yahweh for who he is, we will trust in him!
